Transit Visa​

A Canadian Transit Visa allows foreign nationals to transit through Canada on their way to another destination. It is typically required if you are passing through Canada on your way to another country and will be staying in Canada for less than 48 hours.

Eligibility Criteria

  1. Determine If You Need a Transit Visa:

    • Transit visas are not required for travelers from certain countries if their layover is less than 48 hours. Check the IRCC website to see if you need one.
  2. Gather Required Documents:

    • Valid passport
    • Proof of onward travel (e.g., flight tickets to your final destination)
    • Visa for the final destination (if applicable)
    • Proof of funds (if applicable)
    • Passport-sized photographs
  3. Complete the Application Form:

    • Fill out the appropriate form (IMM 5257 for the application for a temporary resident visa).
  4. Pay the Application Fee:

    • The application fee is CAD 100.
  5. Submit Your Application:

    • You can apply online or on paper. Online applications are generally processed faster.
  6. Biometrics:

    • You may be required to provide biometrics (fingerprints and a photograph). You will receive instructions on where and how to provide your biometrics after you submit your application.
  7. Wait for Processing:

    • Processing times vary depending on your country of residence. Check the current processing times on the IRCC website.
  8. Receive Your Visa:

    • If approved, you will receive a visa that allows you to transit through Canada. Ensure that the visa is correctly stamped in your passport.

Application Process

  • Transit Duration: The visa allows you to stay in Canada for up to 48 hours while you wait for your connecting flight.
  • No Employment or Study: You cannot work or study in Canada on a transit visa.
  • Entry Requirements: You must enter and exit Canada within the visa’s validity period.
