Student Visa

A Canadian Student Visa, known as a Study Permit, allows international students to study at designated learning institutions (DLIs) in Canada. Here are the key details and steps for obtaining a Study Permit:

Eligibility Criteria

  1. Acceptance by a DLI: You must have a letter of acceptance from a designated learning institution in Canada.
  2. Proof of Sufficient Funds: You need to demonstrate that you have enough money to pay for:
    • Tuition fees
    • Living expenses for yourself and any family members who come with you
    • Return transportation for yourself and any family members who come with you
  3. No Criminal Record: You must have no criminal record and may be required to provide a police certificate.
  4. Good Health: You may need to complete a medical examination.
  5. Proof of Departure: You must convince an immigration officer that you will leave Canada at the end of your authorized stay.

Application Process

  1. Work While Studying: Most students with a study permit can work part-time during their studies and full-time during scheduled breaks.
  2. Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP): After graduation, students may be eligible for a PGWP, which allows them to work in Canada for up to three years.
  3. Study Permit Renewal: If your study permit expires before you complete your program, you need to apply to extend your stay as a student.
  4. Accompanying Family Members: Your spouse or common-law partner can apply for an open work permit, and your dependent children can study at Canadian primary or secondary schools.

Additional Information

  • Duration of Stay: Most business visitors can stay for up to 6 months in Canada. The border services officer may allow you to stay for a shorter or longer period, and this will be indicated in your passport.
  • Extensions: If you wish to stay longer than your authorized period, you need to apply for an extension at least 30 days before your current status expires.
  • Multiple-Entry Visa: This visa allows you to enter and leave Canada multiple times during the visa’s validity period (up to 10 years or one month before your passport expires, whichever comes first).
  • Single-Entry Visa: This visa allows you to enter Canada only once.
